Steve Jobs announced the iPhone in January of 2007 at the Macworld conference. He spent almost an hour talking about the device. This was a huge event in tech history.
The first iPhone came out 6 months later and Apple sold 270,000 iPhones in the first week it was available for sale.
Apple didn't start here, however, so how did the iPhone come to be?
If you've ever been curious about the iPhone evolution timeline, we are going to talk about the history of Apple, its products, and the iPhone itself below.
Apple iPod to Apple iPhone
Before the iPhone, Apple was well-known for iPods and all of the capabilities they brought to the table.
Apple's exceptional changes to the game they created with the invention of the iPod are too significant to overlook.
2001: First iPod
The first iPod was released with a small LCD screen and only 5G of space. Even so, this was the thing that made everyone start to love Apple products. This iPod was discontinued in 2014, but not before having a very long and successful run.
As Apple shares started to rise and companies were more interested, this was a pivotal moment for Apple to become one of the biggest global companies.
Over 10 million iPods were sold in the beginning, but Apple didn't stop there and released 6 more generations of their successful new product.
2004: iPod Mini
The iPod Mini had two generations (it was discontinued in 2005) and was a much smaller product compared to the first iPod.
There was a new click wheel and a similar version of the screen in this device.
iPod Minis were popular for their variety of color options and appealing to many different audiences.
2005 – 2012: iPod Nano
This iPod was different than its predecessors for many reasons and that's part of why it was so successful for so long.
The design was sleeker, you could take it with you anywhere, and there were color options to choose from. It had a total of 7 generations with the last two offering touch screen options.
The iPod Nano was also discontinued in 2017.
2005 – 2007: iPod Shuffle
You may remember the commercials for the iPod Shuffle because they were colorful, fun, and vibrant with dancing and music.
The iPod Shuffle had four generations before it was discontinued in 2017 with the iPod Nano. However, during its time, this was also a useful iPod that many people purchased.
2007-2019: iPod Touch
The most recent iPod release from Apple is the iPod Touch, which has a variety of features and options to choose from upon purchase.
You can get this iPod with a WiFi multi-touch interface, YouTube, wireless access to iTunes, and the Safari browser.
It launched in 2007, but it has had 7 generations since then. In this latest iPod (the 7th generation of the iPod Touch), there are 256G of space.
The success of the iPod up until this point encouraged Apple to start figuring out how to create the first "smartphone".
The iPhone Evolution Timeline
As with the iPod, there have been years and years of advancement in the iPhone arena. Here are some of the highlights to take note of to better understand the history of the iPhone.
2007: First iPhone
Launched in 2007, the first iPhone had a 3.5-inch display, 2-megapixel camera, and a multi-touch screen. There had never been a phone like it before.
Over 300,000 were sold during the first weekend and this showed people that Apple was a huge contender as a mobile phone brand.
The first year after the iPhone was released, Apple's stock gained only 7 cents (bring it to $122.04). This was increased by almost 16% in year 2 with the price rising up to $141.43, making investors of the company very happy.
2008-2009: iPhone 3G and 3GS
There were not a lot of differences between the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone. It was faster, cheaper, and available in more places around the world, but it was basically an upgraded version of the same phone.
The iPhone 3GS release marked the beginning of Apple releasing phones almost every year. It was an interim update to the iPhone 3G because it maintained a lot of the same features, but it still had some new features that excited Canadian customers.
Up until this point, technology had not been advancing quickly enough for people to get a new phone each year. Apple felt the pressure from its customers to start producing new phones with new tech each year and that's part of why the iPhone 3GS came to be.
2010-2011 – iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S
Apple's iPhone 4 was a complete makeover of the iPhone. It was exciting because this model offered new features, a new look, and better specs.
One of the things that came from this launch was Facetime that worked over WiFi.
Some of the things stayed the same as before, but this was the new era for the iPhone. There were over 100 new features in the iPhone 4 compared to the iPhone 3GS.
The iPhone 4S was an interim update to the iPhone 4, similar to the iPhone 3GS update. During this release, however, the iPhone was available for the first time on all of the major networks.
Just nine days before the Apple iPhone 4S was released globally, founder Steve Jobs passed away from pancreatic cancer.
On the first day, more than 1 million phones were sold or pre-sold.
2012 – iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 was exciting due to the changes in software and hardware, but it did not offer a lot of new features.
Some of the notable features were the Do Not Disturb function, Facebook integration, Apple Maps with turn-by-turn navigation, and a better Siri.
While these updated features were great, the improvements of this phone were in the specs. Apple finally upgraded to a 4-inch screen, which was a huge change from its predecessors. It also had a better resolution at 1136 x 640, making it a 16:9 aspect ratio.
This phone was easier to fit into someone's hand because it was taller, but they still kept the same Retina display.
Compared to past iPhones, this was the lightest in history. The first iPhones were created with glass and plastic.
The iPhone 4 was made with glass and stainless steel, but the iPhone 5 was created using glass and aluminum. This made it 20% lighter than the iPhone 4 and this was a big deal.
2013 – iPhone 5S and 5C
This marked the first time Apple released two phones at once, due to increased competition from other rising companies.
The big thing about the iPhone 5C that caught people's attention was the color. It was the first time that people could buy an iPhone that was not black or white. You can find iPhone 5Cs in pink, green, blue, yellow, and white.
You'll also notice that the iPhone 5C is a little thicker and heavier due to the polycarbonate shell.
With the iPhone 5S, biometrics were introduced. People could now scan their fingerprint on the phone and unlock the device without putting in a passcode.
The iPhone 5S also offered the opportunity to record video in slow-motion, likely due to the fact that many people were using their phones as their cameras instead of having an actual camera with them. Since this was the case, the camera needed to perform better and Apple knew that then.
2014 – iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
With the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, there were (again) some major changes in appearance. The high-definition Retina on the 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch display was a huge upgrade. In addition to that, the larger model offered 128G of storage.
The iPhone 6 Plus at 6.07 ounces was a little heavier than the iPhone 6 (4.55 ounces), but beyond the display and size differences, the phones were the same.
One of the big things that came with this release was the feature called Near Field Communication (NFC). This allowed a person's iPhone to be used as a payment device, later giving birth to Apple Pay.
2015 – iPhone 6S and 6S Plus
The improvements in these phones were on the inside with better software and hardware. However, there are still changes to features and functionality that people liked from these models.
For instance, this was the first release to feature a 3D touch.
Your phone could now tell the difference between a tap, a light press, and a hard press, which created the opportunity for more features and better user experience.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus had better batteries and were also faster. The camera underwent some significant improvements, which was something Apple iPhones were due for at this point.
2016 – iPhone SE and iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
In only six months following the release of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, there was another release.
The iPhone SE was introduced as a response to the public, as some people wanted to have smaller phones that still functioned well. This was essentially another upgraded version of the iPhone 5 and was dubbed "SE" meaning Special Edition.
About six months after that release, Apple came out with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
There didn't seem to be a lot of major changes from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus except that Apple decided to get rid of the headphone jack. This meant users had to connect to their headphones with Bluetooth alone and the company faced a lot of backlash for this decision.
2017- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
With this release, Apple allowed users to charge their iPhones wirelessly. Inductive charging was great, but you also needed a special device to make it work.
The only other big thing to come with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus was a better processor. These phones had the Apple A11 quad-core, 64-bit, 2.4 GHz processor with 2G RAM. The iPhone 8 Plus had 3G Ram.
In addition to that, the motion coprocessor was improved to an M11 and the camera was also slightly upgraded.
2017-2018 – iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, & iPhone XR
The biggest difference about the iPhone X was the screen. Apple got rid of the material around the screen, as well as the home button. An OLED display covers the entire phone surface.
This means that people could no longer use Touch ID, but instead, used facial recognition software to unlock their phones.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max were upgraded versions of the iPhone X. Apple wanted to improve the look of the iPhone X and improve the speed as well. In the process, these models were almost completed water and dust resistant.
The iPhone XR was announced at the same point as the iPhone XS, but it was released later. It was designed to be a better budget option against the other recent releases because they were some of the priciest iPhones ever produced.
For people that wanted to spend slightly less, the iPhone XR offers many of the same features, but it is missing the OLED and Super Retina display (among other things).
2019 – iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro & iPhone 11 Pro Max
Apple's most recent release of the iPhone 11 came with much success, especially due to the camera options.
The iPhone 11 was released as a better budget option again, similar to the iPhone XR. A lot of people don't want to overspend on their iPhones and knowing the price of something in Canada is a great way to budget before you actually spend the money.
Better battery life, six color options, and an updated processor are the big selling points with these models, but they are not all the same.
The iPhone 11 has two rear cameras with a 12-megapixel lens. You also have the option to take wide-angel and ultra-wide-angle photos. 4K video capabilities and a better low light mode are also included in the camera options.
The other models released here (iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max) have three rear cameras. One of them is a telephoto lens and one of them is an ultra-wide-angel lens.
What's Next for the Apple iPhone?
After seeing the iPhone evolution timeline, you may be curious about what Apple will do next with its successful line of iPhone models.
Canadians can continue to look forward to new technology and better upgrades as Apple continues to produce "the next big thing".
